Description
Dog Breed: Great Dane. Location: DeRidder, LA DOB: 08/17/2024 Meet Charla, a sweet and soulful young Great Dane who blossoms into the ultimate velcro dog once she knows she’s safe. At first, she may be cautious with new people and new situations, but give her a few days and you’ll discover a goofy, affectionate girl with endless love to give. Her favorite place in the world is right next to you on the couch, leaning her full weight into you like the professional snuggler she is. Charla has moderate energy and strikes a wonderful balance between playful and relaxed. She enjoys playing with toys and will happily entertain herself, but she’s just as content lounging in the sun or curling up beside her favorite person. Attention is her love language, and once she bonds, she bonds deeply. Charla is fully housetrained and crate trained. She may cry briefly in her crate but settles quickly. She walks well on leash, though she may occasionally pull when something catches her interest. She is non-destructive when given appropriate chew toys and is still learning to feel comfortable in the car, where she settles nicely with a toy or bone after a short adjustment period. Charla currently lives with four large dogs and enjoys playing with them. She does best with larger canine companions, as she can be enthusiastic and a bit rough during play. Because of her size and play style, she would not be a good fit for a home with small dogs. She has also lived with cats. Initially cautious, she became more comfortable after a few days, but began chasing when the cats ran or played. Her size and enthusiasm were overwhelming for them, so a cat-free home or one with very dog-savvy cats would likely be the best fit. Due to her size, excitement, and tendency to lean and jump when happy, Charla would do best in a home with older children or teens. She thrives in a calm environment with limited foot traffic and a patient family willing to give her a few days to adjust. A home with another large, playful dog would be ideal, though not required. She would also do best in a home where someone is around frequently, as she truly loves companionship. Charla has shown mild resource guarding with high-value items like bones, so separated feeding and supervision around food items is recommended. She may also counter surf if food is left within reach, as she is smart and opportunistic. Charla may have had a difficult past, but she adjusts quickly once she realizes she is safe. Her confidence continues to grow, and when she opens up, she becomes a loving, goofy, and devoted companion who simply wants to be close to her people. Overview:
The Great Dane is an impressive and regal breed, often dubbed the "Apollo of Dogs" for its dignified stature and noble appearance. Originating in Germany, where it was historically bred for hunting boar, this giant breed is renowned for its immense size and striking presence. Physically, Great Danes are characterized by their tall, muscular build, short coat (available in various colors like fawn, brindle, black, blue, and harlequin), and expressive eyes. Despite their formidable size, they possess a surprisingly gentle and affectionate temperament, making them wonderful family companions. They are known for being patient with children and generally get along well with other pets. While their size might suggest otherwise, Great Danes can adapt to apartment living if provided with sufficient daily exercise, as they are not overly energetic indoors. However, prospective owners should be aware of certain health considerations, including a predisposition to bloat (gastric dilatation-volvulus), hip dysplasia, and certain heart conditions, necessitating careful breeding and regular veterinary check-ups. Overall, a Great Dane offers a loving and loyal addition to the right home.
