Dog Breed: Terrier / Mixed (medium coat). Meet Tootsie! She is an 8-year-old Terrier mix with a heart of gold. This sweet girl was picked up as a stray and brought to the Riverside shelter, where unfortunately no one came looking for her. Thankfully, she was rescued, placed in a loving foster home, and given the medical care she needed. Now she is ready for the next chapter of her story—finding her forever home! Tootsie does well with large dogs, small dogs, and even cats! While she gets along great with her furry foster siblings, she is truly all about her people. She loves to sit quietly by your side, soak up affection, and will never turn down pets or cuddles. She is also potty trained and crate trained, making her an easy companion to welcome into your home. A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
