Description
Dog Breed: Beagle. Adoption Fee: $300.00. Our foster says Dominic is the snuggliest beagle she's ever had. "He’d climb in my soul if he could - he likes to be on top of me or on my lap when possible". He’s a fun little guy, always goes to the wrong side of the door when he’s waiting for you to open it. He gets along great with other dogs, even sharing toys, and seems to like everyone he meets. Dominic also does great with the cats and hasn’t bothered the chickens, but he will chase squirrels. We'd rate his energy level as moderate. His house training is excellent but... he is a bit mischievous. On his first day within the first hour he plundered the pantry. He loves to destroy stuffies, nibble on soft blankets, chew on bones and chase frisbees. Dominic sleeps in his crate at night and will cry initially, then settles down. When the family is not home or cannot supervise him, he’s in the crate. He has done well for up to 6 hours. Dominic needs a family that can give him lots of love and affection and won’t mind having a constant shadow or a dog who wants to be really close. A secure fenced yard would probably be best, his leash walking skills are not the best. Dominic is heartworm positive and also tested positive for Ehrlichia and Lyme, but is being treated for all of that. He will be ready for a sleepover mid-May.

Overview:
The Beagle is a beloved scent hound with a rich history, originally bred in England for hunting hare and rabbit. Their most recognizable physical traits include a sturdy, compact build, adorable floppy ears, and soulful brown or hazel eyes. Beagles typically weigh between 18-30 pounds and stand 13-16 inches tall, featuring a smooth, dense coat that comes in a variety of tri-color or bi-color patterns. In terms of temperament, they are known for being exceptionally friendly, curious, and outgoing, making them wonderful companions for families with children and other pets. However, their strong prey drive and inclination to follow interesting scents mean they require a securely fenced yard and consistent leash training. While adaptable, their need for exercise and tendency to vocalize (howl!) makes them less ideal for small apartment living unless daily walks and mental stimulation are guaranteed. Regarding health, Beagles can be prone to certain conditions like hip dysplasia, epilepsy, and intervertebral disc disease, making responsible breeding and regular veterinary check-ups important.
