Description
Dog Breed: Shepherd / Mixed (short coat). Meet Fred, a shepherd mix born around October 2024 who recently traded the warmth of Arkansas for a new life in Minnesota. While he has the handsome features of a shepherd, he is a uniquely compact guy, weighing in at just under 50 lbs—giving him the manageable, sturdy size of a beagle mix. Fred is a total lovebug who has mastered the art of being the perfect houseguest. He is already house trained, great in his crate, and a complete gentleman on walks since he doesn't pull on the leash. This social southern gentleman is a friend to everyone he meets, getting along famously with dogs, cats, and kids alike. He is excellent in the car, making him the ideal co-pilot for errands or weekend adventures. Fred already knows how to sit and shake, proving he’s as smart as he is sweet. While he might whine just a tiny bit when first settling into his kennel, he quiets down quickly once he knows he’s safe. Because Fred successfully navigated heartworm treatment before his big move, he simply needs a family committed to keeping him on a regular heartworm preventative to stay healthy. In exchange, he promises a lifetime of loyal companionship and endless snuggles. If you are looking for a well-mannered, affectionate companion who is ready to settle into a forever home, Fred is waiting to meet you. Adoption fee includes: Full veterinary exam, Alter, Prepaid microchip, Dewormed, Rabies vaccine (if age appropriate), Distemper combo vaccine(s) appropriate to age, Bordetella vaccine, 4DX (over 6 months of age), Flea/tick and heartworm preventative while in rescue. Adoption fee: $575.00

Breed overview
Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
