Description
Dog Breed: Terrier / Mixed (medium coat). Meet Rome, the terrier mixed breed. Rome came to the Shelter with some siblings (Rory and Raye). They had been in a home environment with children, other dogs and farm animals. Upon arrival to the Shelter, Rome was initially really unsure of the new people and the environment. He has slowly started to come out of his shell. Rome would thrive in a savvy adoptive home that will be patient with him as he transitions. When he is feeling comfortable, he is a typical adolescent â running around, playing with toys and getting his ya-yaâs out. Rome may do well in a home with another dog after a meet ân greet here at the Shelter. Rome is available for pre-adoption at this time. Come meet him, fall in love and take him home after his neuter surgery. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering âPawsitivity Bucksâ with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz locationâs Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end âmeet and greetsâ (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If youâd like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Breed overview
Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
