Description

Dog Breed: German Shepherd Dog / Husky. Meet Rosie! Rosie is a ~1yr old, 50 lb female spayed German Shepherd Dog (and husky?) mix looking for a home. She is black and tan with huge Fennec foxlike ears and light “eyebrows” that give her an adorably expressive face. This pup is a former stray from Menifee County Animal Shelter who is in foster. Rosie is a friendly, affectionate, smart and active girl. She hasn’t met a person she doesn’t like, plays constantly with our male Aussie mix and is always up for a car ride or new outdoor adventure. Rosie will need a home without cats or small critters (she has high prey drive typical of her breed/s, but no history of injuring a cat/small animal) A few things about Rosie from the foster: -housebroken -crate trained (quiet and doesn’t chew her bedding) -smart and sensitive, responds to changes in tone/body language and learns quickly -knows her name, come, sit, off, learning shake -walks well on leash (used to a head collar), enjoys going to parks (and yes, if you’re out in public with her you will be routinely stopped by people admiring her and asking what kind of dog she is and if she’s part coyote (she’s not ) -curious and confident in new places, not reactive on leash or in the yard -very active, loves roughhousing with our dog and being outdoors but will also snooze on the couch by your side for hours -will bark/alert to cars/people arriving at the house, but very friendly in greeting new people -great car rider, quiet and calm, and appreciates a Starbucks pup cup -good for baths, brushing, nail trims and handling -respects a fence. Our backyard fence line is shared with a poultry pen and although she loves to watch the birds intently, she doesn’t bark at them or try to climb over or dig under the fence -not afraid of loud noises. You can routinely hear gunfire from an adjacent property in our yard and Rosie is completely unbothered. Will also sleep a few feet away from a screaming infant unfazed -loves toys and loves to chew. She likes removing the squeakers from stuffed toys and will chew Kongs, Nylabones, sheep horns for hours -will dramatically sigh, whine, groan and occasionally bark to express herself -spayed, vaccinated, dewormed, heartworm negative and on monthly heartworm/flea/tick prevention -likely has environmental allergies (atopy), currently managed with Apoquel (oral allergy med that she takes well with squeeze cheese) Things we’re working on: -Rosie is very respectful of food at her level when people are in the room, but has been known to sneak snacks off the coffee table if left unsupervised -May chew up kids toys or other items left on the floor when unsupervised (she tends to just chew up items, not ingest them and hasn’t had any GI upset from this) -Can jump up on people when excited Rosie is an amazing dog and will be a wonderful active companion for someone. She’s very smart/trainable and I think she has great potential for dog sports (scentwork, agility, barn hunt, etc) as well. I’ve fostered a lot of dogs over the years, and she’s definitely a favorite. If we didn’t have cats, we would be keeping this girl! This pet is now available for adoption to a good and loving home. German Shepherd Dog

A.K.A.: Alsatian, Alsatian Wolf Dog, Shepherd Dog, GSD, Deutscher Schäferhund, Schäferhund, Berger Allemand, Pastore Tedesco, Perro de Pastor Alemán, Alsatian Dog
Overview:

The German Shepherd Dog, a truly iconic breed, originated in Germany in the late 19th century, primarily for herding sheep. They are easily recognizable by their athletic, medium-to-large build, typically weighing between 50-90 pounds, with a distinct double coat that can be black and tan, sable, or solid black. Known for their intelligence and loyalty, German Shepherds possess a remarkably trainable and courageous temperament, making them exceptional working dogs in fields like police and service work. While generally good with families when properly socialized, their high energy levels and need for mental stimulation make them unsuitable for apartment living without significant daily exercise. Prospective owners should be aware of common health concerns such as hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as degenerative myelopathy, underscoring the importance of responsible breeding and regular veterinary care.
