Description
Dog Breed: Unknown breed (short coat). Location: Taghkanic, NY Bucky (a/k/a Buckaroo, Buckster, The Bucking Bronco) is a male, neutered Australian Cattle Dog around one year of age, and he has quite a tale to tell for such a young fellow. Bucky was fending for himself for at least several weeks in North Carolina. When things got pretty cold over the winter, he started jumping into the backyards of the neighborhood he was holed up in. Some good Samaritans in the neighborhood took Bucky under their wings and reached out to ACDRA. When we heard his story (and saw his photos), we had to give Bucky a chance by bringing him into foster care with ACDRA, and the rest is history. Since coming into foster care about a month ago, we have learned what an amazing boy Bucky is, and he has done a great job of learning how to live in the company of humans. Bucky is SMART, and very eager to learn. He loves toys, food and other dogs. If there is a game to be played, Bucky is up for it. Bucky has acclimated to crate training amazingly well. In terms of training, he has mastered sit, down, wait (at doors), stay, out (drop the toy), heel and recall are coming along and are pretty darn good at this point. Bucky has learned to play a great game of fetch (chuck-it and frisbee are his faves). Bucky has met at least a dozen dogs since coming into foster care, and he would like to play with all of them. He takes corrections from old cranky dogs very well, but he doesn’t necessarily stop trying. ;-) He is doing a great job of learning to tone it down with the dogs that aren’t interested in play. With other playful dogs, Bucky is all in and has a pretty rambunctious play style. He has done well with male and female dogs. Like many cattle dogs, Bucky can be a bit slow to warm up to new humans, but once he makes friends with you, he is good as gold. When you hear where Bucky came from and how far he’s come in such a short period of time, you will understand that the sky is the limit for Bucky. He would do best with an experienced Australian Cattle Dog owner who is ready to have fun (with a good bit of patience mixed in). Bucky would do fine in a home with or without other dogs. Breed overview
Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
