Description
Dog Breed: Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Mixed (medium coat). Meet Sally, the Australian Cattle dog! Sally came into the Shelter after her previous guardian didn't have a safe, secure place to keep her. Sally was originally rescued from a situation in Louisiana as a little puppy. She was found in a kennel outside with her littermates and mom, with no one to care for her. Someone took her in and raised her. She is very smart and knows âsitâ, âstayâ, âspeakâ and even âtakeâ (when she picks up an item and brings it to her bed). She would love to continue working her brain in her adoptive home with her next family through positive reinforcement training. Sally has lived with other dogs (small and large) and has done well. She has also been around dog-savvy felines and, although she would occasionally chase them in play, she never caused injury. She showed mothering behavior to some orphaned kittens who tried to nurse on her. Sally is energetic and would thrive in an active household that will enrich her life through daily physical and mental stimulation. Sally is available for pre-adoption at this time. Come meet her, fall in love and take her home after her spay surgery. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering âPawsitivity Bucksâ with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz locationâs Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end âmeet and greetsâ (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If youâd like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Breed overview
Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
