Dog Breed: Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Mixed (short coat). Location: Washington, DC. Meet Calvin, the Cattledog Calvin is a smart, affectionate, approximately one-year-old Australian Cattledog, weighing about 40 lbs. He was initially a stray, spent time in a shelter, was placed by ACDRA with a foster owner for a few weeks, and then went home with a foster family of retirees. At that time, Calvin was about 25 pounds and it was believed that he was two years old. As it turned out, however, Calvin was still a puppy and has since almost doubled in size. His current foster family doesn’t have a fenced-in yard and they are finding it difficult to give him as much activity as he needs. They believe he would be better off at a home where there is more room for him to run. Calvin is very sweet and a fast learner See the videos below of Calvin doing a few tricks. He is fully housebroken, very treat-motivated, and highly trainable. He loves chewing on toys and Nylabones, going on walks, and chasing a ball. He loves playing with other dogs, loves snuggling with his foster family, and sleeps peacefully through the night. Calvin is neutered, microchipped, and current on all vaccinations and preventatives. A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
