Description
Dog Breed: Dachshund (short coat). Hi, I'm Rocket — and yes, the name fits. I am five months old, seven pounds of pure chaos and affection, and I have never once been accused of being chill. I came into DARE because a little boy I loved turned out to be allergic to me (not my fault, not his fault, just tragic for everyone). My first family loved me enough to find me a better situation, and now I'm here, ready to launch myself directly into your life and your lap. I like walks. I like zoomies. I like riding in my backpack like a tiny king. I like YOU, probably, and I just met you. My Ideal Home I'm good with other dogs, kids of all ages, men, and women — I'm pretty adaptable for a little guy. I'd thrive somewhere with an active lifestyle and someone willing to take me outside often so I can keep working on my potty training. Not sure about cats yet — that's still TBD. A Few Important Things to Know Still potty training: I'm mostly there! I'll go outside reliably if you take me out frequently. Consistency is key — I'm smart and I pick things up fast. Crate nights are rough: I've been sleeping in a crate and I am NOT quiet about my feelings. My foster thinks I might do better in the big bed. Worth exploring together. I am vocal: I have opinions and I will share them. Loudly. If you need a silent dog, I am not your guy. Neutering required: I'm not neutered yet, but my adopter must commit to getting that done. It's part of the deal — non-negotiable. Velcro tendencies: I am affectionate. Very. If you wanted personal space, maybe a goldfish? What I Bring to the Table I am fully vaccinated, heartworm negative, and healthy as can be. I'm smart, sweet, and so ready to be someone's everything. If you've got energy, patience for a puppy, and a spot on your bed — Rocket is cleared for launch. If you know I'm your forever pup, fill out an adoption application at daretorescue/adoption-application — and don't forget to put my name on your application! Can't adopt but want to help? Overview:
The Dachshund, affectionately known as the "wiener dog," is a fascinating breed originating in Germany, primarily bred to hunt badgers and other burrowing animals. Their most distinctive physical characteristic is their long, low-slung body and short, muscular legs, a feature perfectly adapted for tunneling. They come in three coat types – smooth, longhaired, and wirehaired – and various sizes, from miniature to standard. Temperamentally, Dachshunds are known for being courageous, curious, and often quite playful, with a surprising amount of energy. While they are intelligent, their independent nature can make training a delightful challenge. Their small size and relatively low exercise requirements make them well-suited for apartment living, and they can be wonderful companions for families, though early socialization is key, especially with children and other pets. Regarding health, their unique body shape predisposes them to intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), so careful handling and weight management are crucial.
