Description
Dog Breed: German Shepherd Dog / Terrier. Kenai is a 9-week-old, 16-lb German Shepherd mix named after Little Brother Bear—he's a gentle giant with a big heart! This handsome boy may be one of the bigger pups in the litter, but don't let that fool you. He loves cuddles just as much as playtime. He’s still learning all the puppy basics, including potty training, and currently uses puppy pads while practicing going outside. He has done great in gated puppy spaces. Kenai has access to an open crate at all times, sometimes snoozing inside. He would benefit from having people home often to tend to his puppy needs. Kenai does well with children and with other dogs, though he will need slow introductions to other dogs for now. He currently lives with cats in his foster home and is mostly uninterested in them. Kenai loves toys of every kind, from ropes and stuffies to puppy chews. He loves to explore the world, romping around with his siblings, then happily settling in for a good nap afterward. As a German Shepherd mix, Kenai will grow into an intelligent and active dog who will thrive with regular exercise and mental enrichment. A fenced yard would be helpful but not required if a family is active. With patience, consistency, and lots of love, he is sure to become an amazing companion. Are you ready for your new best friend? Overview:
The German Shepherd Dog, a truly iconic breed, originated in Germany in the late 19th century, primarily for herding sheep. They are easily recognizable by their athletic, medium-to-large build, typically weighing between 50-90 pounds, with a distinct double coat that can be black and tan, sable, or solid black. Known for their intelligence and loyalty, German Shepherds possess a remarkably trainable and courageous temperament, making them exceptional working dogs in fields like police and service work. While generally good with families when properly socialized, their high energy levels and need for mental stimulation make them unsuitable for apartment living without significant daily exercise. Prospective owners should be aware of common health concerns such as hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as degenerative myelopathy, underscoring the importance of responsible breeding and regular veterinary care.
