Description
Dog Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). Lucy was surrendered to NorthStar when her owner could no longer care for her dogs. Although she is 8 years old, Lucy is in good health, energetic and house-trained. She is a good listener who loves long walks and car rides. She is currently up to date on her shots, but is due for several vaccines in May - we'll ensure she receives those. Lucy has lived with another dog and is currently in temporary foster with a Lab and Golden Retriever. On walks she may bark at other dogs out of curiosity. She's not aggressive, just loud. Lucy has a notable prey drive and will try to chase squirrels, birds, and deer. However, she was recently cat-tested while staying with a cat owner for two weeks, and she did not bother the resident cat. Lucy is crate trained and enjoys spending time in her individual crate even when given free roam of the house. Lucy is more submissive than her housemates. Overall, she is a very sweet senior girl just looking for a new place to hang her leash! If you are interested in meeting Lucy, please complete an adoption application at .northstarpets and ask for her by name!

Overview:
The Chihuahua, a captivating breed known for its diminutive size, boasts an ancient and somewhat mysterious origin, with most theories pointing to Mexico as its birthplace, potentially descending from the "Techichi," a small companion dog of the Toltec civilization. Physically, they are easily recognizable by their small, compact bodies, large expressive eyes, and erect ears, appearing in both smooth and long-coated varieties, showcasing a vast array of colors and markings. Despite their tiny stature, Chihuahuas possess a big personality; they are often described as spirited, alert, and fiercely loyal to their owners, sometimes displaying a bold and confident demeanor. While their small size makes them exceptionally well-suited for apartment living, they thrive in homes where they receive ample attention and mental stimulation. They can be good family pets for older children who understand how to interact gently with a small dog, but their delicate build makes them less suitable for boisterous toddlers. Regarding health, Chihuahuas can be prone to certain conditions like patellar luxation, heart problems, and dental issues, making regular veterinary check-ups crucial for their well-being.
