Dog Breed: Dachshund (short coat). Duke is a lovable senior dog looking for a forever home where he can receive the care and attention he deserves. As a senior, his eyesight may not be what it used to be, but with guidance, he navigates his surroundings with ease. He's particularly fond of snuggling with his human family members and other calm, older dogs. Duke would thrive in a home with senior dogs or no other dogs, where he can be the center of attention. He's currently on medication for separation anxiety, but he's adjusting well to his foster family's schedule. The Dachshund, affectionately known as the "wiener dog," is a fascinating breed originating in Germany, primarily bred to hunt badgers and other burrowing animals. Their most distinctive physical characteristic is their long, low-slung body and short, muscular legs, a feature perfectly adapted for tunneling. They come in three coat types – smooth, longhaired, and wirehaired – and various sizes, from miniature to standard. Temperamentally, Dachshunds are known for being courageous, curious, and often quite playful, with a surprising amount of energy. While they are intelligent, their independent nature can make training a delightful challenge. Their small size and relatively low exercise requirements make them well-suited for apartment living, and they can be wonderful companions for families, though early socialization is key, especially with children and other pets. Regarding health, their unique body shape predisposes them to intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), so careful handling and weight management are crucial.
