Dog Breed: Terrier / Mixed (short coat). FENNEL IS SCHEDULED FOR HER SPAY ON JUNE 25, 2026 WHEN SHE IS 16 WEEKS OLD. SHE IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION OUTSIDE A 30 MINUTE RADIUS OF DES MOINES DUE TO HER VETTING NEEDS. Fennel is a mixed breed puppy who was born February 27, 2026 after her momma was rescued from a homeless camp in Oklahoma. She is one of a litter of 8. Fennel weighs just under 9 lbs. right now, at 8 weeks old, and is expected to be a medium sized dog when full.grown. Her momma, Marty, weighs 35 lbs. but we don't know who Daddy is. Fennel is working on socializing with other dogs and learning the basics of being a house dog. A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
