Description
Dog Breed: German Shepherd Dog. To complete an adoption application, click here: /forms/form?formid=5879 Weston is an adorable older man with a lot of life left to live. Weston is a big shepherd and is right now 88# and still underweight! This sweetheart is very social and confident and does well around other dogs publicly and is not at all reactive. He does have some resource guarding issues though we are working on and so at this point it would be safest to not adopt him out to a home with other dogs or small children unless the owner is well versed in behavior modification and has breed experience. He has lived in a home with both but we don't want to put anyone at risk. Weston does have a small degree of gastrointestinal disease that he gets vitamin B12 injections and a special food to manage. We are open to and would love to find Weston a "forever foster" where someone gives Weston a forever home but we manage his medical needs. The qualifications for this kind of home be that you are willing to transport him to our vets in Cedar Falls, IA or Waverly, IA. Overview:
The German Shepherd Dog, a truly iconic breed, originated in Germany in the late 19th century, primarily for herding sheep. They are easily recognizable by their athletic, medium-to-large build, typically weighing between 50-90 pounds, with a distinct double coat that can be black and tan, sable, or solid black. Known for their intelligence and loyalty, German Shepherds possess a remarkably trainable and courageous temperament, making them exceptional working dogs in fields like police and service work. While generally good with families when properly socialized, their high energy levels and need for mental stimulation make them unsuitable for apartment living without significant daily exercise. Prospective owners should be aware of common health concerns such as hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as degenerative myelopathy, underscoring the importance of responsible breeding and regular veterinary care.
