Description

Dog Breed: Australian Shepherd. Chestnut is a Mini Australian Shepherd who turns heads everywhere he goes. With his gorgeous merle coat, bright expressive eyes, and that classic Aussie alertness, he’s as striking as he is sweet. He is the full package: smart, affectionate, eager to learn, and already showing the loyal, peoplefocused nature Aussies are known for. Chestnut loves being near his humans, watching everything with curiosity, and soaking up attention. He’s the kind of dog who wants to be part of whatever you’re doing — car rides, chores, adventures, or couch time. Chestnut will thrive with someone who enjoys training, enrichment, and giving him a job to do, even if that “job” is just being your shadow and best friend. Chestnut is ready to start the next chapter of his life with a family who will appreciate his intelligence, his sweetness, and his beautiful spirit. If you're interested in adopting me, fill out an adoption application online at .polkcountyhumanesociety/adopt where you will also find a link to reserve me for an appointment. Some pets are in foster homes or may already have an appointment scheduled, so the appointment is important to make sure I will be available to meet you when you come. Polk County Humane Society is located in Bolivar, Missouri, but also makes transports to the Denver, CO, Des Moines, IA and St. Louis areas twice monthly. For potential adopters in those areas, we can do a virtual visit using FaceTime or another app. Just request an appointment using the same link, but note that you want the visit to be virtual. We will call you at the time of the visit once it is confirmed. For long distance transports to Colorado and Iowa, there is an additional $100 fee to cover the cost of the transport ($65) and a health certificate from a veterinarian ($35). For transports to St. Louis, the additional fee is $50 to help cover gas. Going that last mile home for our sweet pets! All of our pets are neutered or spayed, have vaccinations appropriate for their age, treated with flea/tick/heartworm prevention, dewormed and dogs are also microchipped. #adoptdontshop

Australian Shepherd

A.K.A.: Aussie, Little Blue Dog, Spanish Shepherd, Pastor Vasco, New Mexican Shepherd, California Shepherd, American Shepherd, New Mexican Sheepdog, California Sheepdog, American Sheepdog, Australian Sheepdog
Overview:

The Australian Shepherd, despite its name, actually originated in the western United States during the 19th century, bred primarily for herding livestock on ranches. These striking dogs are medium-sized with a sturdy build, often sporting captivating merle coats (blue or red) and piercing blue, amber, or marbled eyes, sometimes with two different colors (heterochromia). Known for their exceptional intelligence and high energy, Aussies possess a strong work drive and thrive on having a "job" to do, whether it's agility, obedience, or extensive exercise. Their temperament is generally loyal, affectionate, and good-natured with their families, though they can be reserved with strangers. Due to their high exercise requirements and need for mental stimulation, they are best suited for active families or individuals with ample outdoor space and a commitment to training; apartment living is generally not ideal. Potential owners should also be aware of common health concerns like hip and elbow dysplasia and certain eye conditions, including Collie Eye Anomaly (CEA) and Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA).
