Description
Dog Breed: Labrador Retriever (short coat). Adoption Fee: 400. Drake is a beautiful 1.5 year old yellow lab who was born into a life of horrors, lived in this hell hole for over a year and has now come out on the other side to know the safety of rescue. This gentle soul is in search of a very special forever home that will have the patience and love to go at Drake’s slow pace with interactions while he learns to feel love, safety and trust. Drake came to us along with 28+ other labs from a horrendous hoarding situation in Nebraska that included deceased dogs as well. Sadly, none received any vet care, real socialization or even a shred of a normal life. When resources and food are limited in a small outdoor space, unfortunately dogs may fight to survive. Drake being extremely timid and submissive did not fare well growing up in this type of environment. We have been treating an infected wound on his leg that was down to his muscle, since January but we are beyond happy that his leg was able to be saved. Facial and body scars are healing as well, but it is taking time for Drake to build his confidence and trust. It’s all about baby steps but he is slowly making progress! We look forward to the day he will bond with a family of his own and become a possibly, timid but happy companion full of love. Until then he is very happy living with his foster family and their multiple dogs. He even will play with the other dogs now and we will require another resident dog in his new home to help with his recovery. Drake is a super smart boy and is crate trained and potty trained and feels secure in his favorite spots now. He will whine to tell you when he needs to go outside and although he may not come to you for a while, he sure will let you approach him to sit beside him and give him pets, attention and brushings…always with a hopeful look in his eye. He loves his food and never misses a meal and even found a type of bone he is obsessed with. All great signs of learning about life! He does not like a leash yet but we will continue trying so he will need a secure 6-foot fence. If you like walking your dog, this may never happen with Drake…time will tell. This cautious low-key boy may be a project to start but as you see the changes he works so hard for, we promise you it will fill your heart, and the rewards will be immense. We do however, ask you to recognize his needs and the time he will need to adjust to a new home and life. If you would like more information on Drake or think he may be a fit for you, please fill out an application at .HavenAnimalRescueNebraska ADOPTION DONATION: $400 *ALL DOGS MUST BE INSIDE COMPANION ANIMALS! Overview:
The Labrador Retriever, a beloved and highly popular breed, originated in Newfoundland, Canada, where they were initially bred to assist fishermen by retrieving nets and stray fish. Physically, they are medium-to-large dogs, known for their strong, athletic build, short, dense, weather-resistant double coat (commonly seen in black, yellow, or chocolate), and their distinctive "otter" tail. Temperamentally, Labs are celebrated for their friendly, outgoing, and good-natured disposition, making them exceptional family companions. Their intelligence and eagerness to please contribute to their trainability, though they do require consistent exercise to prevent boredom and destructive behaviors. While adaptable, their energy levels make them more suited to homes with yards, or highly active families, rather than apartment living, unless daily extensive exercise is guaranteed. Regarding health, Labs can be prone to certain conditions like hip and elbow dysplasia, and some eye conditions, so responsible breeding practices are crucial. Overall, their loyalty, versatility, and affectionate nature firmly establish the Labrador Retriever as a wonderful addition to many households.
