Description

Dog Breed: Labrador Retriever (short coat). Isla Moon is an 8-month-old dark silver Labrador retriever and as sweet as they come. She is a recent owner surrender whose family was not up to the task of having a dog at their stage in life. She's a very smart girl who is kennel trained, potty trained, and knows commands like sit, come, and lay down. Leash training is going well but needs consistent work. At just 8 months old she is 65 lbs. Her mom was around 150 lbs so she’s expected to be a large dog when fully grown and filled out. Currently Isla is thriving at her foster home surrounded by livestock and children. Isla would thrive in a similar environment where she can stay stimulated physically and mentally. We would recommend Isla be in a home with older children just because of her size. She can get excited with small children and tends to knock them down. Isla is a beautiful lab who is looking to please her owners but shes still a puppy so upkeep on her training and patience is a must. She will need a special diet due to allergies to chicken, beef and corn. If you are interested in meeting Isla, please complete an online application at hopeanimalrescueofiowa.duplie/forms/196/dog-application Adoption fee is $300 which includes spay/neuter, microchip, and age appropriate vaccines.

Overview:

The Labrador Retriever, a beloved and highly popular breed, originated in Newfoundland, Canada, where they were initially bred to assist fishermen by retrieving nets and stray fish. Physically, they are medium-to-large dogs, known for their strong, athletic build, short, dense, weather-resistant double coat (commonly seen in black, yellow, or chocolate), and their distinctive "otter" tail. Temperamentally, Labs are celebrated for their friendly, outgoing, and good-natured disposition, making them exceptional family companions. Their intelligence and eagerness to please contribute to their trainability, though they do require consistent exercise to prevent boredom and destructive behaviors. While adaptable, their energy levels make them more suited to homes with yards, or highly active families, rather than apartment living, unless daily extensive exercise is guaranteed. Regarding health, Labs can be prone to certain conditions like hip and elbow dysplasia, and some eye conditions, so responsible breeding practices are crucial. Overall, their loyalty, versatility, and affectionate nature firmly establish the Labrador Retriever as a wonderful addition to many households.
