Description

Dog Breed: Boston Terrier (medium coat). Meet Chabelo – the Boston Terrier mix. Chabelo arrived to the Shelter with trauma to his left eye. Our medical team performed an enucleation – leaving Chabelo with one eye but a whole lot more comfortable. Despite the discomfort he felt, Chabelo has been a peppy social butterfly since his arrival. He enjoys going for walks with staff and volunteers. He does pull on leash and, although small, is fairly strong. Chabelo can be forward in greeting other dogs, so he may not be every dog’s cup of tea. Any resident dogs should meet at the Shelter prior to adoption. He has lived with cats and even slept together. In a previous home Chabelo slept when left alone. He also had access outdoor through a doggy door to go potty and was stated to be house trained. Adopters for Chabelo are highly recommended to be well versed in brachycephalic dogs (aka short nosed dogs). Guardians of brachycephalic dogs need to be mindful of their dog’s stress levels, especially in relation to exercise and heat. Chabelo will likely need more frequent vet visits throughout his life to keep him happy and healthy as he ages. Our clinic team can discuss this more with any potential adopters. Chabelo's adoption fee has been sponsored by a good samaritan! The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Boston Terrier

A.K.A.: American Gentleman, Boston Bulldog, Roundheads, Little Blue Boys, Tuxedo Terrier
Overview:

The Boston Terrier, affectionately known as the "American Gentleman," originated in the late 19th century in Boston, Massachusetts, making it one of the few breeds developed in the U.S. Physically, they are compact and muscular, typically weighing between 12 and 25 pounds, with a distinctive "tuxedo" coat pattern—black or brindle with white markings on the muzzle, chest, and often a blaze between the eyes. Their expressive, round eyes and erect, bat-like ears are hallmark features. Temperamentally, Boston Terriers are friendly, intelligent, and lively, known for their charming personalities and unwavering loyalty. They adapt well to various living situations, making them excellent companions for both families with children and individuals in apartments, as long as they receive adequate exercise and mental stimulation. Regarding health, they are a brachycephalic (short-nosed) breed, so care must be taken in hot weather to prevent overheating, and they can be prone to eye conditions and patellar luxation. Overall, their delightful nature and manageable size make them a beloved choice for many.
