Description
Dog Breed: Shepherd / Mixed (short coat). Name: Toby Sex: Male Estimated Age: 4 weeks old (as of 5/1) Best Guess for Breed: Shepherd Mix Weight: About 2 lbs (as of 5/1) Lives With: Dogs, cats, kids and all people! Housebroken? He’s working on his potty training - he’s just a puppy! Story: Toby was rescued from a shelter in North Carolina with his momma and 7 siblings. We are so happy to have him safe and sound in a foster home in the DC area now. Toby is a happy sweetie who loves people and gets along great with other dogs and puppies. Toby is just looking for someone to be his new best furend and we know that he will repay them with endless amounts of love and tail wags. Like all dogs, Toby will need an adopter who is committed to setting him up for success by enrolling in obedience training and exercising him both mentally and physically. He will also need love, patience, and socialization in order to thrive! The fee to adopt Toby is $475. That covers the cost of all his vaccines, the collar he’s wearing, and his care in his foster home. He’s up to date on all age appropriate vaccines. Toby is still nursing so he’s not ready to go to his furever home until 6/1 (when he’s 8 weeks old), but we’re accepting applications for him and his siblings now. If you think that Toby might be your perfect match, apply today!

Breed overview
Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
