Unless otherwise noted, ALL animals are fostered and available for adoption on Long Island, NY. Meet Andy — a 5½-year-old, 75 lb Foxhound mix with a gentle soul and a heart full of love. Andy is housebroken, great with cats, and absolutely loves other dogs. In fact, he would thrive in a home with canine companions to help him feel confident and happy. Andy is calm, cuddly, and happiest when he’s close to his people. Once the evening rolls around, he’s ready to curl up for the night — usually asleep by 9–10 PM and content to snooze peacefully until morning. He can be a little shy when meeting new people, but with patience and kindness, his sweet personality quickly shines through. One of Andy’s favorite ways to show trust is by gently leaning into you while sitting nearby. And if he gives you his paw, that’s his polite request for more pets and attention. Andy gets along well with kids and adults once he has a chance to warm up. He truly seems to believe every animal he meets could be his next best friend. Like many hounds, he does have a curious streak and loves to follow exciting scents and wildlife — especially deer — so a secure yard with no escape routes is very important for his safety. Sadly, Andy is returning to the rescue through no fault of his own. His family is going through a divorce, and neither parent is moving into housing that allows dogs over 40 lbs. They love Andy deeply and want nothing more than for him to find a safe, loving forever home where he can continue to thrive. If you’re looking for a loyal, affectionate, easygoing companion who loves snuggles, naps, and furry friends, Andy may be the perfect addition to your family.

A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
