Description

Dog Breed: Labrador Retriever (short coat). Adoption Fee: $200. Meet Winston! Winston journey with us began when he was found as a stray in Marengo. He was quickly adopted by the family that found him but they have since decided that Winston needed more. Winston is a playful, affectionate boy looking for a patient home where he can feel safe and understood. This handsome guy loves spending time with his people, especially if it involves cuddling up on your lap after a fun game of fetch. Tennis balls and attention from his favorite humans are some of his favorite things! Winston does well with other dogs and has also been around cats successfully. He tends to bond closely with women and can sometimes be intimidated by men at first, so slow introductions and a calm environment will help him build confidence. Like many dogs, Winston has some areas he’s still working on. He has shown food aggression and would do best with an experienced adopter who can provide structure, consistency, and positive reinforcement training. Because of this, Winston is seeking a home without young children.Winston may not love kennel time, but give him a comfy lap and someone to love, and he’ll happily settle in beside you. With patience, understanding, and the right home, Winston has so much love to give. ❤️ If you're interested in meeting Winston, please complete an online adoption application for him. This application can be found on our website at .wesavepets.

Overview:

The Labrador Retriever, a beloved and highly popular breed, originated in Newfoundland, Canada, where they were initially bred to assist fishermen by retrieving nets and stray fish. Physically, they are medium-to-large dogs, known for their strong, athletic build, short, dense, weather-resistant double coat (commonly seen in black, yellow, or chocolate), and their distinctive "otter" tail. Temperamentally, Labs are celebrated for their friendly, outgoing, and good-natured disposition, making them exceptional family companions. Their intelligence and eagerness to please contribute to their trainability, though they do require consistent exercise to prevent boredom and destructive behaviors. While adaptable, their energy levels make them more suited to homes with yards, or highly active families, rather than apartment living, unless daily extensive exercise is guaranteed. Regarding health, Labs can be prone to certain conditions like hip and elbow dysplasia, and some eye conditions, so responsible breeding practices are crucial. Overall, their loyalty, versatility, and affectionate nature firmly establish the Labrador Retriever as a wonderful addition to many households.
