Description
Dog Breed: Beagle. Adoption Fee: $300.00. Miriam is a spunky little senior beagle girl. She likes cuddles, trips to the dog park and a little bit of chicken broth poured on top of her kibble. She is very friendly with other dogs and has enjoyed sharing a dog bed with Matty, also on our website. Her foster dad says Miriam feels it is important for her to know what is going on, so she likes to be right next to him checking things out. She sleeps in her crate all night without a problem and is doing great with housetraining, (although she is not left unsupervised in the house). Overall Miriam does not appear to be food crazy like many beagles, but she does get really excited for treats -- so much so that she can be hard to contain. Perhaps there were not treats in her past life. It is possible that humans were not always kind to Miriam as sometimes, if she is unsure of your intentions, she will scurry away. Her confidence would benefit from some basic training where she could rely on certain outcomes and rewards. She walks well on a leash, at least for short periods, and is really a most loveable dog. Miriam is heartworm negative, expected to arrive in Florida sometime the last week of May and will be ready for a sleepover.

Overview:
The Beagle is a beloved scent hound with a rich history, originally bred in England for hunting hare and rabbit. Their most recognizable physical traits include a sturdy, compact build, adorable floppy ears, and soulful brown or hazel eyes. Beagles typically weigh between 18-30 pounds and stand 13-16 inches tall, featuring a smooth, dense coat that comes in a variety of tri-color or bi-color patterns. In terms of temperament, they are known for being exceptionally friendly, curious, and outgoing, making them wonderful companions for families with children and other pets. However, their strong prey drive and inclination to follow interesting scents mean they require a securely fenced yard and consistent leash training. While adaptable, their need for exercise and tendency to vocalize (howl!) makes them less ideal for small apartment living unless daily walks and mental stimulation are guaranteed. Regarding health, Beagles can be prone to certain conditions like hip dysplasia, epilepsy, and intervertebral disc disease, making responsible breeding and regular veterinary check-ups important.
