Description
Dog Breed: Presa Canario (short coat). Draco is easy to leash up in his kennel and completely non-reactive as we pass all of the other dogs on our way out of the room heâs kenneled in. He settles into an easy walking gait almost immediately, without much pulling at all. He takes treats gently, knows âsitâ and waitâ cues & is happy to show them off in exchange for some hot dog pieces! Draco has previously participated in shelter playgroup in the gentle dainty grouping of dogs. Draco is not overly affectionate, pushy or needy, but a calm and steady companion who clearly appreciates the break from his kennel. He uses the bathroom multiple times while we are outside and might have had some previous house training. To foster Draco please email fosterPGCpetsco.pg.md.us To adopt, please visit Prince Georgeâs County Animal Shelter in person, Tuesday - Friday 11am - 7pm or Saturday 10am - 4pm. Presa Canario
A.K.A.: Canary Mastiff, Perro de Presa Canario, Dogo Canario, Canary Catch Dog, Presa, Canary Dog, Spanish Presa Canario, Presa Perro, Catch Dog, Presa Canario Mastiff, Canary Island Mastiff
Overview:
The Presa Canario, also known as the Canary Mastiff, is a large and powerful breed originating from the Canary Islands of Spain, where it was historically used for guarding livestock and property. Physically, they are imposing with a mastiff-type build, a broad head, and a short, dense coat typically in fawn, brindle, or black. Temperamentally, a well-socialized Presa Canario is known for its calm, confident, and loyal nature, making them devoted protectors of their family. However, their strong protective instincts and size mean they are generally not recommended for first-time dog owners or apartment living, requiring experienced handling, extensive socialization from a young age, and a secure, spacious environment. While generally robust, they can be prone to common large-breed health issues such as hip and elbow dysplasia and certain heart conditions, necessitating regular veterinary check-ups and a high-quality diet.
