Description
Dog Breed: Dutch Shepherd. Meet Ed Ed is a 1.5-year-old male Dutch Shepherd located in Illinois who’s finally getting the chance to be the puppy he never got to be. After spending much of his early life kenneled, Ed is now thriving in foster care where he’s discovering toys, routines, training, and what it means to simply enjoy life. He’s currently working on all the normal “young dog” things — manners, obedience, confidence, and learning how to channel his eager-to-please personality. Ed is incredibly people-oriented, loves human contact, and is always ready to learn and engage with those around him. Dog-savvy kids? Yes! Learning to ignore cats Smart, affectionate, and eager to please Soaking up every new experience like the puppy he truly is Ed is still very much a work in progress, but he’s proving every day that with patience and guidance, he’s going to make an incredible companion. Stay tuned as we continue learning more about this handsome boy!

Breed overview
Holland Shepherd
A.K.A.: Dutch Shepherd, Dutchie, Hollandse Herder, Herder
Overview:
The Hollandse Herdershond, or Dutch Shepherd, is a versatile and intelligent breed originating from the Netherlands, where they were traditionally used by shepherds and farmers for herding and guarding livestock. Physically, they are a medium-sized dog with a powerful, muscular build, typically weighing between 50-70 pounds and standing 21-25 inches tall. Their coats come in three varieties: short-haired, long-haired, and wire-haired, all displaying the breed's distinctive brindle pattern in shades of gold or silver. Temperamentally, Dutch Shepherds are known for their strong work ethic, loyalty, and unwavering devotion to their families. They are highly trainable and excel in various dog sports like obedience, agility, and protection work. While generally good with children, their high energy levels and need for mental stimulation make them better suited for active families with experience in dog ownership, rather than first-time owners or those in apartment settings. Like many active breeds, they can be prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, making responsible breeding and regular veterinary check-ups important for their long-term health.
