Dog Breed: Shepherd. Currently located at our Owensboro, KY location Meet Zane Zane has been with us since February, and he’s more than ready to find a family of his own. Life hasn’t been easy for this handsome boy. Zane and his siblings were found roaming in the countryside and had to be humanely trapped for their safety. To make matters worse, Zane had been shot in the face before coming into our care. Despite everything he has been through, he has remained resilient and continues to show us what an amazing dog he is. Zane is estimated to be about 1.5 years old, weighs around 50 pounds, and is believed to be a Shepherd mix. He does well with other dogs and is ready to leave his difficult past behind and start the next chapter of his life with a loving family. A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
