PRINCESS NEEDS A FOSTER OR FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: Princess Best Guess for Breed: Shepherd and Terrier mix Best Guess for Age: 3 years as of May 2026 SEX: Female Approximate Weight: 31 lbs Gets Along With: Other dogs! We haven't seen them with cats or kids but we are happy to discuss integration techniques with any potential adopters! Currently Living at: South Carolina shelter - Princess needs a foster or adopter to make her way to the DC area Special adoption considerations: Princess is a truly Lucky Dog. She tested positive for heartworms, but landed in a place where heartworm treatment is provided! Heartworm is not contagious to people or other pets, but results from mosquito bites. Heartworm, if left untreated, is life threatening, but after treatment, dogs that were heartworm positive should suffer no significant long-term effects so long as they are kept on a monthly heartworm preventative. Heartworm dogs can resume full active and normal lives, but need to be kept calm for 4-6 weeks after treatment. We are happy to discuss where in the treatment process this Lucky Dog is in right now! This adorable 3-year-old girl has a beautiful brindle coat, charming pointy ears, and a sweet expression that’s hard to resist. While we’re still getting to know her personality, Princess has already shown herself to be a lovable pup who is taking all the recent changes in stride. She’s hoping to find an adopter who will give her the time and love she deserves as she settles into her new home. A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
