Description
Dog Breed: German Shepherd Dog. This is Sierra. She is a 4-year-old, 70 lb long-haired German Shepherd — gorgeous, fluffy, and as sweet as they come. She came back to us recently, and if you know this breed, you'll understand why. German Shepherds are loyal to their core. They bond deeply, and once they feel safe and settled in a home, they do what they were bred to do — they protect it. She needs a family who understands that even the most gentle and easy-going Shepherd will always carry a protective instinct — and Sierra is no different. She is incredibly smart and treat motivated — sit, down, stay, heel, come — she's on it. She's calm and well-mannered in the home, housebroken, walks well on leash, great in the car, and is non-reactive to other dogs — but she’d prefer to be your only. Sierra is looking for a family with breed experience, or a genuine willingness to learn. She needs someone who understands that a German Shepherd's loyalty isn't a liability — it's a gift in the right hands. Sierra remembers what having a family felt like. She deserves to feel that again — for good this time. If this sounds like you, please fill out an adoption application at RescueRidge . If your application is a possible match, a volunteer will reach out to you to schedule a meet. Sierra is located in Monmouth County, NJ

Overview:
The German Shepherd Dog, a truly iconic breed, originated in Germany in the late 19th century, primarily for herding sheep. They are easily recognizable by their athletic, medium-to-large build, typically weighing between 50-90 pounds, with a distinct double coat that can be black and tan, sable, or solid black. Known for their intelligence and loyalty, German Shepherds possess a remarkably trainable and courageous temperament, making them exceptional working dogs in fields like police and service work. While generally good with families when properly socialized, their high energy levels and need for mental stimulation make them unsuitable for apartment living without significant daily exercise. Prospective owners should be aware of common health concerns such as hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as degenerative myelopathy, underscoring the importance of responsible breeding and regular veterinary care.
