Description
Dog Breed: Pit Bull Terrier (short coat). Adoption Fee: $200. Meet Tucker, a handsome 9-month-old grey/tan pit bull who recently came into our care as a transfer from the Tama County Humane Society. Thanks to a wonderful wave of recent adoptions over the last several weeks, we found ourselves with the open kennel space and the perfect opportunity to lend a helping hand to our surrounding shelters in need. Tucker is still just a puppy, but due to a lack of early socialization, everything in the big wide world is still very new and overwhelming to him. Because of his past, he is currently learning that people are "okay" and is working hard on learning the ropes of trusting humans. Everything is new to him—he has never been outside on a leash before—so we are taking things very slowly and building his confidence one day at a time. While Tucker is not quite ready to go home yet, he will be officially released for adoption soon. In the meantime, our team is focusing on getting to know him better and showing him how wonderful the world can be. Tucker is fully vaccinated, but he does need to be neutered before he can head to a forever home, a procedure that will take place in the coming weeks. He is a resilient young boy who just needs a little extra time, patience, and gentle reassurance. We cannot wait to watch him blossom into the confident dog we know he can be, and we look forward to introducing him to a family who will give him the safe, loving fresh start he deserves soon. If you're interested in meeting Tucker, please submit an online adoption application for him today!

Breed overview
Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
