Description

Dog Breed: Shih Tzu (medium coat). Jack arrived at TJO with a possible spinal injury that left him unable to walk for a time. He has since recovered from his condition, and after some time healing with his foster he's ready to find his new home. He is able to walk and play as easily as any other dog, and loves spending time with people -- whether it's outside in the sun or inside curled up on the couch! Jack has shown strong potty skills, but during the transition into a new home, it's best to start from the beginning. Accidents initially should be expected, but will improve quickly as he decompresses and adjusts to the new, reliable routine. Jack has also gained some weight which adds stress to joints and can be a strain on the body. To be sure he's healthy he will need to avoid fatty and high-carb treats. Using real food in small amounts (pieces of lean chicken, safe fruits and veggies) when teaching tricks and skills is a great way to avoid packing on the pounds, keeping mealtime portions appropriate for his size will help him return to a healthy weight. OTHER PETS: Jack has gotten along well with other dogs he's met while staying in his foster home, but he's been noted to be selective with some. In order to ensure a good match, Jack should meet any dog that he may be living with prior to adoption. [Case-by-Case (Must Meet First)] OWNER EXPERIENCE: Jack's best match would be someone experienced with positive reinforcement, and an established relationship with a vet in order to be sure he has access to the care he needs should any problems develop in the future. Jack, as most small dogs, generally don't enjoy being picked up, so adults and children should avoid picking him up for everyone's safety. Moving small dogs can be accomplished by luring with a treat, or by being called with a happy voice. [Some Experience] KIDS: Jack has been hesitant with children at first, but can relax with patience a quiet space, and as always, time spent with children should be actively monitored. He hasn't shown signs of resource-guarding while at the shelter and has been tolerant of handling, so it's likely that he'd make a good family pet. [Case-by-Case (Must Meet First)] ACTIVITY LEVEL: Jack seems to adapt well to the pace of his household. He has been playful and social during his stay in a foster home, and he's just as happy going for a walk or playing in the yard as he is curling up on the couch for a good movie. A combination of regular exercise and mental enrichment such as food puzzles and scent games will help meet his needs. [Couch Potato / Good Walking Buddy] VETERINARY CARE: While Jack has since recovered from his injury, it's still possible that some further complications may arise in the future. Someone with an established relationship with a vet would be his best match to ensure that he can receive the care he needs throughout his life. [Above Average] LEVEL OF TRAINING NEEDED: Positive reinforcement training will help Jack not only learn new skills and fun tricks, but also help him to bond with his new owner while having fun and building confidence. [Minimal] GROOMING: Regular brushing will help keep Jack's coat clean and matt-free between grooms; he should be groomed every 6 - 8 weeks. [Routine Brushing / Professional Grooming]

Shih Tzu

A.K.A.: Lion Dog, Chrysanthemum Dog, Foo Dog, Xi Shi dog, Tibetan Temple Dog, Chinese Imperial Dog, Lhasa Lion Dog, Shitzu, Schipperke, Tzu, Shih Tzu Kou, Kou
Overview:

The Shih Tzu, affectionately known as the "lion dog," boasts an ancient and regal lineage, originating from the Tibetan plateau and further refined in imperial China. These charming canines are easily recognized by their striking appearance: a small, sturdy build, a distinctive undershot jaw, and a long, flowing double coat that often requires regular grooming to prevent matting. Temperamentally, Shih Tzus are renowned for being affectionate, outgoing, and playful companions, making them wonderfully suitable for a variety of households. Their adaptable and generally good-natured disposition means they often thrive in families with children and are particularly well-suited for apartment living due to their modest exercise requirements. While generally robust, potential owners should be aware of common breed-specific health concerns, including respiratory issues (due to their brachycephalic, or "smushed" face), eye conditions, and luxating patella. Despite these considerations, a Shih Tzu typically brings immense joy and companionship to their devoted owners.
