Description
Dog Breed: Chihuahua (medium coat). OTHER PETS: Cookie has been wonderful with the other dogs he's met. He's been both friendly and respectful, even when another dog doesn't seem interested in him. While excited to meet other dogs, he seems to match energy well and knows how to take a hint when he might be showing a little too much energy. [Likely (Must Meet First)] OWNER EXPERIENCE: Experience with positive reinforcement or willingness to learn. While Cookie does warm up quickly, he is still timid and unsure with people he's not familiar with. When meeting new people, he should be allowed to approach on his own time, but also wouldn't say no to a few offered treats! He takes treats very gently from people, though he has shown a tendency to resource guard high-value things like bones and his food. [Some Experience] KIDS: Because of Cookie's resource guarding seen at the shelter, his best match would be a home without kids. While his guarding can be managed easily by simply leaving him alone while he eats or enjoys a bone, young kids may be too unpredictable for him to feel comfortable. Trading up is the safest way to remove food and toys when necessary, using something of equal or higher value, this teaches dogs they don't have to lose things they value. [Adults Only] ACTIVITY LEVEL: Cookie hasn't shown much interest in play, but once he's comfortable he'll climb right into your lap and settle down for a nap. He may be a lap dog, but he definitely savors his time outside, especially on a clear spring day! And once he's fully settled into his new home, he may even gain a new interest in playing or toys. A combination of regular, appropriate exercise and mental enrichment such as food puzzles and scent games will help meet his needs. [Couch Potato / Good Walking Buddy] VETERINARY CARE: Cookie arrived at TJO with what is called a `cherry eye` in both eyes. While not an immediate concern at this time, an established relationship with a vet will be important to monitor any changes and keep up with any future care he may need. [Above Average] LEVEL OF TRAINING NEEDED: Cookie is still at the beginning of his training journey, and will do best learning with someone who can offer patience as he adjusts and decompresses in his new home. Positive reinforcement will help Cookie not only learn his new skills and fun tricks, but also help him to feel more comfortable and confident in himself! It will provide a good opportunity for him to bond with his new owner as well. [Minimal] GROOMING: Routine brushing will help to minimize shedding in the home. [Minimal]

Overview:
The Chihuahua, a captivating breed known for its diminutive size, boasts an ancient and somewhat mysterious origin, with most theories pointing to Mexico as its birthplace, potentially descending from the "Techichi," a small companion dog of the Toltec civilization. Physically, they are easily recognizable by their small, compact bodies, large expressive eyes, and erect ears, appearing in both smooth and long-coated varieties, showcasing a vast array of colors and markings. Despite their tiny stature, Chihuahuas possess a big personality; they are often described as spirited, alert, and fiercely loyal to their owners, sometimes displaying a bold and confident demeanor. While their small size makes them exceptionally well-suited for apartment living, they thrive in homes where they receive ample attention and mental stimulation. They can be good family pets for older children who understand how to interact gently with a small dog, but their delicate build makes them less suitable for boisterous toddlers. Regarding health, Chihuahuas can be prone to certain conditions like patellar luxation, heart problems, and dental issues, making regular veterinary check-ups crucial for their well-being.
