Description

Dog Breed: Labrador Retriever (medium coat). Meet Rosie This pretty blond Lab came from the same property as our recent doodle mixes, Henrietta and Steve. The Good Samaritans who found them reached out to us about two additional dogs after their neighbor, who breeds doodle mixes, was jailed, and the dogs were left abandoned on the property. Animal Control stepped in, removed the dogs, and asked Worthy Dog to help. Rosie was living outside and was very underweight, with little to no prior vet care. She was very shy and shut down on intake, unsure of this new world around her. We brought in a trainer to get her more comfortable with the leash and thresholds (coming in and out of the home), and her foster mom worked with her to get her more comfortable with all the new sounds and activity of home life. Since entering rescue, Rosie has been slowly learning that people, homes, leashes, and daily life can all be safe and good things. Her foster family is working with to help her build confidence. She is a very submissive, gentle, and conflict-avoidant pup. She does well with other dogs, but to date, she tends to be more of a quiet observer than a playful social butterfly. She would likely benefit from a social, confident dog in the home to help continue showing her the ropes. She has proven to have excellent house manners; she’s house-trained, non-destructive, and settling nicely into foster care. While she was initially fearful of the leash, she now really enjoys walks and follows right along once you get moving. Walks may actually be her favorite part of the day now, and a great way to build rapport with her humans. Rosie has been spayed and, amazingly, tested heartworm negative. She arrived in Northern Virginia on 5/16 and is currently being fostered in a home with a mom, dad, and college-age son. She is still building confidence and learning to trust, but underneath it all is a very sweet, lovely dog who needs a patient owner who is willing to work with her and give her time to fully blossom. Overview:

The Labrador Retriever, a beloved and highly popular breed, originated in Newfoundland, Canada, where they were initially bred to assist fishermen by retrieving nets and stray fish. Physically, they are medium-to-large dogs, known for their strong, athletic build, short, dense, weather-resistant double coat (commonly seen in black, yellow, or chocolate), and their distinctive "otter" tail. Temperamentally, Labs are celebrated for their friendly, outgoing, and good-natured disposition, making them exceptional family companions. Their intelligence and eagerness to please contribute to their trainability, though they do require consistent exercise to prevent boredom and destructive behaviors. While adaptable, their energy levels make them more suited to homes with yards, or highly active families, rather than apartment living, unless daily extensive exercise is guaranteed. Regarding health, Labs can be prone to certain conditions like hip and elbow dysplasia, and some eye conditions, so responsible breeding practices are crucial. Overall, their loyalty, versatility, and affectionate nature firmly establish the Labrador Retriever as a wonderful addition to many households.
