Dog Breed: Coonhound / Mixed. COPPER IS SCHEDULED FOR HIS NEUTER ON JULY 2, 2026 WHEN HE IS 16 WEEKS OLD. HE IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION OUTSIDE A 30 MINUTE RADIUS OF DES MOINES DUE TO HIS VETTING NEEDS. Copper arrived in Iowa in Mid-May after he and his two siblings survived the parvovirus after they were taken in at a rescue in Oklahoma. These three are strong of heart and have a will to live! Their mom is said to be an American English Coonhound; dad -unknown. He will likely grow to be a medium sized (40-60 pound) with long ears, short fur, and a lengthy snout to sniff out those critters. The breed are said to be agile, sleek and hardworking muscular dogs possessing great endurance. They also are extremely devoted pack dogs that make sweet and affectionate pets for active people. Copper and his litter mates are curious, precocious and so much fun to watch as they explore their surroundings. They bond quickly to humans and enjoy cuddling and snuggling with you AFTER they have been allowed to play freely for at least 30 minutes several times a day. They are also stubborn and said to be pig-headed when it comes to training. They have started crate training in their foster home and don’t like it; complaining bitterly about being left alone. Copper is the biggest and boldest of the three. He instigates most of the shenanigans and the other two willing follow. They are all learning to vocalize and frequently have “discussions” about play, sharing laps, and food. He is also the first to come up to new people and make their acquaintance. Copper will need a job to do and will thrive in an environment with other dogs to help show him how to pack. Hounds have a strong prey drive, so he may not be suitable in a home with cats. He will thrive with lots of activity, daily exercise and humans to love and provide him with companionship. A large fenced in yard would be preferred as well as frequent walks with his humans.
