Dog Breed: Coonhound / Mixed. LUCY IS SCHEDULED FOR HER SPAY ON JULY 2, 2026 WHEN SHE IS 16 WEEKS OLD. SHE IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION OUTSIDE A 30 MINUTE RADIUS OF DES MOINES DUE TO HER VETTING NEEDS. Lucy arrived in Iowa in Mid-May after she and her two siblings survived the parvovirus after they were taken in at a rescue in Oklahoma. These three are strong of heart and have a will to live! Their mom is said to be an American English Coonhound; dad -unknown. She will likely grow to be a medium sized (40-60 pound) with long ears, short fur, and a lengthy snout to sniff out those critters. The breed are said to be agile, sleek and hardworking muscular dogs possessing great endurance. They also are extremely devoted pack dogs that make sweet and affectionate pets for active people. Lucy and her litter mates are curious, precocious and so much fun to watch as they explore their surroundings. They bond quickly to humans and enjoy cuddling and snuggling with you AFTER they have been allowed to play freely for at least 30 minutes several times a day. They are also stubborn and said to be pig-headed when it comes to training. They have started crate training in their foster home and don’t like it; complaining bitterly about being left alone. Lucy is the smallest and most laid-back of the three. She often watches her brothers get into shenanigans and may join them if she's not busy napping. They are all learning to vocalize and frequently have “discussions” about play, sharing laps, and food. She loves to lay cuddled up next to her human and is a bit more cautious of new people but warms up quickly. Lucy will need a job to do and will thrive in an environment with other dogs to help show her how to pack. Hounds have a strong prey drive, so she may not be suitable in a home with cats. She will thrive with lots of activity, daily exercise and humans to love and provide her with companionship. A large fenced in yard would be preferred as well as frequent walks with her humans.
