Description

Dog Breed: Neapolitan Mastiff (medium coat). Fernando's foster had this to say about him: `Fernando is a gentle, easy-going Neapolitan Mastiff with a calm, thoughtful personality. Since arriving in foster care, he has settled beautifully into apartment living, quickly adapted to a consistent routine, and has been an exceptional houseguest. He walks nicely on leash, rides quietly in the car, is house-trained, and patiently waits until he's outside to potty. Fernando has an impressively high threshold for excitement. He calmly observes deer, geese, squirrels, cyclists, children, passing strangers, traffic, construction, landscaping equipment, wildlife, and everyday neighborhood activity before moving on. He may pause to watch another dog or wildlife out of curiosity, but he responds well to gentle guidance and is highly treat-motivated, making him enjoyable to work with. While he may need a little encouragement to move along if another dog catches his attention, he remains calm and non-reactive. As he's become more comfortable, Fernando's playful and affectionate personality has started to shine. During walks, he'll sometimes playfully bump into your legs or give your hand a gentle lick. At home, he loves cuddle time and will happily paw at you for another head scratch or belly rub. He enjoys checking in with his people throughout the day and is happiest spending quiet time by your side. After his walks, Fernando is content with or without a treat, patiently stands for his paws and body to be wiped down, and then happily settles in for a well-earned nap. He's also proven to be very adaptable—he has mastered apartment stairs, confidently hops in and out of an SUV on his own, and has adjusted wonderfully to life without a yard. Fernando already knows a few basic commands, including sit and shake, and with a tasty treat, he's eager to learn even more. Like many Mastiffs, he can have a stubborn streak now and then, but he responds well to patient, gentle guidance and positive reinforcement. Fernando notices everything, reacts to almost nothing, and would much rather make a friend than make a fuss. He's a calm, loyal, adaptable, and affectionate companion who would thrive with someone looking for a gentle giant to share daily walks, cozy naps, and plenty of head scratches and belly rubs. He is continuing to recover well medically, and his coat is growing back in nicely.` Fernando is 78 pounds.

Overview:

The Neapolitan Mastiff, or "Neo," is an ancient and imposing breed originating from Southern Italy, specifically the Naples region. Descended from Roman war dogs, their primary role historically was as a formidable guardian of property and livestock. Physically, they are undeniably striking: immense, powerfully built dogs characterized by their loose, wrinkled skin, particularly around the head and dewlap, and a massive, broad skull. Their coat is short and dense, typically coming in grey, black, blue, or mahogany, often with brindle markings. Despite their intimidating appearance, Neos are known for their surprisingly calm, loyal, and affectionate nature with their families. They are generally patient and protective of children within their own household but require early socialization due to their natural guarding instincts. Due to their sheer size and need for space, they are not typically suited for apartment living and thrive in homes with secure, ample outdoor areas. Health-wise, potential owners should be aware of a predisposition to certain conditions common in giant breeds, such as hip and elbow dysplasia, cherry eye, and bloat, necessitating responsible breeding practices and veterinary care.
