Description
Dog Breed: Boxer / Chinese Shar-Pei / Mixed (medium coat). Kima is a mild-mannered, sociable older gal hoping to find a mellow, caring home where she can enjoy a few more golden years. She's undemanding, walks very nicely by your side when out and about, and leans in to get petting and attention. She's lived with another dog near her age and size, and has also with a much smaller dog, and they got along well. She's interested in meeting other dogs, but is really more drawn to the people around her. She grew up with a couple of kids and was tolerant and gentle with them, although that sometimes changes a little as dogs get to be seniors. She has not lived with cats and sometimes seemed interested in chasing them, but responded to a `leave it` cue. She previously lived mostly outdoors and slept in the garage, but she'd appreciate more indoor comforts now, if at all possible. If there are other dogs already at home, we recommend a structured introduction here at the shelter to see if they're compatible before adoption. All dog adoptions come with a $200 voucher for use with a local, certified positive reinforcement trainer, thanks to the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation! Breed overview
Overview:
The Boxer Pei, a captivating hybrid of the Boxer and Chinese Shar-Pei, emerges as a loyal and protective companion. Originating from designer breed efforts, this medium-to-large dog typically exhibits a strong, muscular build with a coat that can range from short and sleek to a slightly denser, often wrinkled texture reminiscent of its Shar-Pei parent. Their temperament often blends the Boxer's playful enthusiasm and affectionate nature with the Shar-Pei's independent and watchful demeanor, making them alert guardians who are also devoted to their families. Early socialization and consistent training are crucial for developing their best qualities. While adaptable, their moderate exercise needs and potential for separation anxiety suggest they thrive in homes with attentive owners, possibly making them less ideal for prolonged apartment living without significant commitment to outdoor activities. Health concerns can mirror those of their parent breeds, including potential for joint issues like hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as skin fold dermatitis if their Shar-Pei wrinkles are pronounced.
