Description
Dog Breed: Shiba Inu. Kiwi may appear to be a mix of a baby fox along with an AI-generated image of a stuffed animal; but we can assure you, she is in fact a fluffy dog. Kiwi is incredibly intelligent. We aren't just talking dog-level smarts here. Imagine the CIA trained a dog to investigate and memorize patterns---that would be Kiwi. Kiwi is your typical quirky Shiba Inu (IYKYK!). In fact, we will just let Kiwi write her own bio at this point... "If you love the loyalty and intelligence of a dog, but also appreciate the quiet independence, cleanliness, and quirks of a cat, look no further! I’m a bit reserved when I first meet new people, as I like to assess my audience before giving out my full trust. But don't let my aloofness fool you. Once we bond, I will be your devoted, loyal, and loving best friend for life." Hobbies: Sunbathing, chasing the perfect afternoon nap, going for long sniffing walks, and showing off my world-famous "Shiba smile". Grooming: I practically groom myself like a cat, which means I stay surprisingly clean and odorless! The "Shiba Vibe": I can be a bit dramatic when I don't get my way (I've got a famous "Shiba yodel" according to my foster mom) and I'm highly independent. I thrive with humans who understand my boundaries."I do great in the car and love going for walkies. Sniff walks are kinda my thing. I can be slightly wary of strangers and judge other dogs mostly on 'vibes' but I am learning with the help of my foster mom how to be more 'outgoing' (eye roll). I am completely potty trained and have been crated but I prefer to know where my staff .. ahem, I mean my humans are at all times." My Ideal Home Because of my breed's typical spirited nature and high prey drive, I am looking for the perfect, structured setup: Experience: I will do best with a family or person who has previous Shiba breed experience. If there is a hole in a fence or a way to exit stage left, I will find it and use it to my personal advantage. If you have vermin to hunt, please introduce me to them; I just want to say hi of course! This dog is up to date on vaccinations and is spayed or neutered. (Please note: Puppies under 3 months old may not be sterilized prior to adoption. If this is the case, your adoption coordinator will provide guidance on the process.) To adopt or learn more about this dog, you must complete an adoption application, which can be found on our website: .sandypawsrescue. PLEASE READ: • If a dog or puppy is listed, they are currently available for adoption. However, they may already be pending an adoption, and their profile may not yet reflect this. • All information is accurate to the best of our knowledge as of the posting date. • Unless explicitly stated, Sandy Paws Rescue does not guarantee the breed of any dog. Breeds listed are educated guesses made by shelter staff, volunteers, or veterinarians. Many of our dogs are mixed breeds, often with pit bull-type genetics, resulting in a wide variety of physical traits and temperaments. Our dogs come from various situations, such as kill shelters, owner surrenders, or as strays. It is likely both parents were mixed breeds as well. Sandy Paws Rescue does not have a public shelter in Massachusetts. Our dogs reside in private foster homes or boarding kennels in the South until adopted. Many dogs are spoken for prior to transport or release from state-mandated isolation. For information on adoption fees, procedures, or FAQs, visit our website: .sandypawsrescue. The FIRST step in adopting from Sandy Paws Rescue is to submit a completed adoption application.

Overview:
The Shiba Inu, a spirited and ancient breed originating from Japan, is renowned for its fox-like appearance and independent nature. Historically bred for hunting in mountainous regions, they possess a strong, athletic build with a distinctive curly tail and alert, expressive eyes. Their coat is typically short and dense, often displaying striking red, sesame, or black and tan colors, complete with a creamy "urajiro" underside. Temperamentally, Shibas are known for their intelligence, confidence, and sometimes aloof demeanor, yet they form strong bonds with their families. While they can be excellent companions, their strong prey drive and independent streak mean they require consistent training and socialization from a young age. They adapt well to apartment living provided they receive sufficient daily exercise, but a secure yard is always a plus. Generally a healthy breed, they can be prone to certain conditions like patellar luxation, hip dysplasia, and allergies, making responsible breeding and regular veterinary check-ups essential. Their unique personality and striking looks make them a captivating choice for experienced dog owners who appreciate a dog with character.
