Dog Breed: Dachshund (short coat). Ruby Grace is a sweet and gentle soul looking for her forever home. This 6-year-old, 13-pound Dachshund loves to sunbathe, explore the yard, and snuggle up on the couch. She's a bit timid at first, but once you get to know her, she's incredibly affectionate. Ruby Grace gets along great with her foster siblings and is waiting for a home where she can be loved and cherished. She is not a big fan of toys but loves her "no rawhide" chews. She also loves to make a blanket "nest" in her kennel and sleep when it's too hot to play outside. She's housebroken and knows use a potty pad indoors if it's storming outdoors. The Dachshund, affectionately known as the "wiener dog," is a fascinating breed originating in Germany, primarily bred to hunt badgers and other burrowing animals. Their most distinctive physical characteristic is their long, low-slung body and short, muscular legs, a feature perfectly adapted for tunneling. They come in three coat types – smooth, longhaired, and wirehaired – and various sizes, from miniature to standard. Temperamentally, Dachshunds are known for being courageous, curious, and often quite playful, with a surprising amount of energy. While they are intelligent, their independent nature can make training a delightful challenge. Their small size and relatively low exercise requirements make them well-suited for apartment living, and they can be wonderful companions for families, though early socialization is key, especially with children and other pets. Regarding health, their unique body shape predisposes them to intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), so careful handling and weight management are crucial.
