Description

Dog Breed: Great Pyrenees (long coat). Luca is a sweet, fluffy girl with plenty of young pup enthusiasm. She likes pets and will ask for more with a “pyr paw”. She enjoys playing with our resident dogs and warmed up to them quickly. She likes toys she can chew on. She sometimes forgets how big she is and tries to jump or climb right up for attention, but she can also be very gentle; we are working on good meeting manners. She will investigate noises or her people moving around, but then settles down and naps after she’s checked things out. Sometimes the investigation may involve barking! She gets along well with children, but due to her size and enthusiastic greetings might do better in a home with slightly older kids, at least until she learns not to jump on greetings. We don’t know how she would do with cats. Luca seems comfortable with grooming; she has been very tolerant of brushing, with a gentle grab at the brush if you hit a ticklish spot. She has shown no problem with handling her paws, and let us clip her nails without fuss. She is a quick learner and already knows her sit. We are working on inside manners like not counter surfing, and making sure she knows that outside is the place for potty. She has done really well on a leash- no pulling so far! She goes into her crate for naps and overnight with just a little coaxing. She sometimes whines or barks a bit but then settles in. She hasn’t had to spend a lot of time alone, but when the people are gone she stays in her crate. We haven’t done much car riding yet but she handled the trip to her foster home well. Adoption fee includes: Full veterinary exam, Alter, Prepaid microchip, Dewormed, Rabies vaccine (if age appropriate), Distemper combo vaccine(s) appropriate to age, Bordetella vaccine, 4DX (over 6 months of age), Flea/tick and heartworm preventative while in rescue. Adoption fee: $650.00

Great Pyrenees

A.K.A.: Pyrenean Mountain Dog, Patou, Chien de Montagne des Pyrénées, Pyrenean, Big White Dog, Bear Dog, Gentle Giant, Great Pyr, Pyr
Overview:

The Great Pyrenees is a majestic and ancient breed, originating in the Pyrenean mountains between France and Spain, where they served as formidable livestock guardians. Physically, they are large, powerful dogs, easily recognized by their thick, double coat, typically white (though sometimes marked with badger, grey, or tan), and a distinctive "double dewclaw" on their hind legs. Despite their imposing size, their temperament is generally calm, gentle, and remarkably patient, making them excellent companions. They possess a natural protectiveness, which translates to a watchful eye over their families and property. While loving and tolerant with children, their size and barking tendencies make them less suited for small apartment living; a home with a yard is ideal. Prospective owners should be aware of common health concerns such as hip and elbow dysplasia, patellar luxation, and certain eye conditions, emphasizing the importance of responsible breeding. Their independent nature also means they require consistent, positive reinforcement training.
