Description
Dog Breed: Rat Terrier (short coat). Little Beau is a 10-year-old male rescue dog with a heartbreaking past, but despite everything he has endured, he continues to show resilience and a gentle, loving spirit. After suffering years of neglect and abuse, Beau is finally safe and ready to find the forever home he has always deserved. Since coming into rescue, Beau has received extensive veterinary care to address the medical issues caused by his difficult history. He has been successfully treated for heartworms and given comprehensive dental treatment. Due to severe dental disease all of his teeth had to be removed, so Beau is now completely toothless. Thankfully, he has adapted well and continues to enjoy soft foods, treats, and all the comfort and affection that come with being cared for. Veterinarians have also evaluated injuries to Beau's spine, including three damaged vertebrae believed to be the result of past abuse. While he has made significant progress with treatment and supportive care, he appears to have reached the maximum recovery possible. Because of this, Beau may always have some physical limitations and would do best in a calm, quiet home where he can relax and feel safe. What Beau loves most is simply being close to his people. He enjoys curling up beside you on the sofa and quietly soaking up affection and companionship. He also gets along well with other calm, low-key dogs who match his gentle energy and respectful nature. Beau is not looking for an active or chaotic environment — he is looking for peace, comfort, and someone who will love him for exactly who he is. One challenge that Beau's caregivers have not been able to fully overcome is his tendency to mark inside the house. Because of this, Beau wears a belly wrap and pad indoors to help manage accidents. His future adopter will need to be understanding of this ongoing issue and willing to continue this simple routine as part of his daily care. Beau handles it well, and for the right person, this small extra effort is far outweighed by the love and companionship he offers in return. Despite everything he has been through, Beau still has so much love to give. He deserves a compassionate adopter willing to offer patience, understanding, and a soft place to land for his golden years. In return, Beau will provide loyal companionship, quiet affection, and the inspiring resilience of a dog who never gave up hope. Overview:
The Rat Terrier is a lively and intelligent American breed, originally developed in the early 20th century from a mix of Fox Terriers, Old English White Terriers, and other small terriers, primarily for farm work and pest control. These compact yet sturdy dogs typically weigh between 10-25 pounds and stand 10-18 inches tall, boasting a short, smooth coat that comes in a variety of patterns, often with large patches of color over white. Known for their energetic and inquisitive nature, Rat Terriers are remarkably adaptable and affectionate, making them excellent companions for active individuals or families. While their boundless energy necessitates regular exercise and mental stimulation, they can thrive in apartments provided their needs are met. Generally a healthy breed, they have a lifespan of 12-18 years, though some may be prone to patellar luxation or Legg-Calve-Perthes disease. Their friendly disposition and eagerness to please make them highly trainable and a joy to live with.
