Description
Dog Breed: Dachshund. Adoption Fee: 395. All interested people should submit an adoption application as their first step. Eleanor is an approximately 2-year-old spayed Dachshund with a heart full of love just waiting to be shared. Found alone and frightened on a rail trail, Eleanor has come a long way and is learning that people can be kind and caring. She can be shy when meeting new people and animals, but once she feels safe, she bonds quickly and becomes the ultimate companion. Eleanor loves nothing more than curling up in a lap for snuggles and affection. She also enjoys playing with her favorite balls and spending time with her people. Eleanor gets along well with both cats and dogs. Because she is sensitive and thrives on companionship, she is looking for a calm home without children and with someone who is home most of the day or can provide plenty of human interaction and companionship. She will reward your patience and love with endless devotion, cuddles, and loyalty. If you're looking for a sweet, affectionate best friend, Eleanor may be the perfect match for you! All pets adopted from GDHS are spayed or neutered, have vaccinations brought up to date, are on heartworm preventative (dogs), FIV/FELV tested (cats) and microchipped. The Greater Derry Humane Society does not have a physical shelter, and all visits are by appointment only.

Overview:
The Dachshund, affectionately known as the "wiener dog," is a fascinating breed originating in Germany, primarily bred to hunt badgers and other burrowing animals. Their most distinctive physical characteristic is their long, low-slung body and short, muscular legs, a feature perfectly adapted for tunneling. They come in three coat types – smooth, longhaired, and wirehaired – and various sizes, from miniature to standard. Temperamentally, Dachshunds are known for being courageous, curious, and often quite playful, with a surprising amount of energy. While they are intelligent, their independent nature can make training a delightful challenge. Their small size and relatively low exercise requirements make them well-suited for apartment living, and they can be wonderful companions for families, though early socialization is key, especially with children and other pets. Regarding health, their unique body shape predisposes them to intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), so careful handling and weight management are crucial.
