Description
Dog Breed: Basenji / Boston Terrier (short coat). Adoption Fee: $150. If you are interested in adopting this dog, please complete an online application at .cvrr.us Due to high demand we anticipate multiple applications for each dog. Our volunteers will review each submitted application, then contact the top 3 most appropriate ones by either email or phone. Calling or emailing us to see if you are being considered will not expedite the process. If you have been selected for an interview we will contact you within 48 hours of submission. Thanks for your patience. Many of our dogs can be seen at Petsmart in Visalia every other Saturday between 10 and 2.

Overview:
The Basenji, often called the "barkless dog," is a fascinating breed originating from Central Africa, where it was historically used for hunting. Physically, they are medium-sized, graceful dogs with a distinctive short, fine coat that comes in various colors, often with white markings on the chest, feet, and tail tip. Their most recognizable features include a wrinkled forehead, alert pricked ears, and a tightly curled tail. Temperamentally, Basenjis are known for being intelligent, independent, and sometimes aloof, exhibiting a cat-like fastidiousness. They can be good companions for active families or individuals but require consistent training and socialization due to their high prey drive and independent nature. While generally suitable for apartment living if adequately exercised, their energy levels demand regular walks and mental stimulation. Health-wise, Basenjis are typically robust, but responsible breeders screen for conditions like Fanconi Syndrome and Progressive Retinal Atrophy.
