Description
Dog Breed: Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler. Looking for an active partner? Meet Grits, a two year old Australian cattle dog/blue heeler mix which accounts for that short multi colored coat. Note the sweet expression as if she is looking right at you so you can be her friend. She is adorable. Currently, she weighs 42 pounds, which is in the medium range. She loves to run and play with the other dogs and considers children and adults she meets as her friends. It is not known if she has lived with cats. She was surrendered by her owner for unknown reasons. Australian cattle dog/blue heeler mixes are known for their intelligence. They are fast learners and like to be given a job to do. They are very loyal to their family and want to be part of their daily life. They tend to be high energy dogs, so they will need lots of daily exercise and mental stimulation to stay happy and prevent boredom related behaviors. She would do best in an active household where she could go hiking, running, or play games of fetch, puzzles, scent work, or obedience games. Grits is working on her leash and crate training. Daily walks will be a good opportunity to work on leash skills as well as socialization skills. It will be a new world to her with all the new sights, smells, sounds, and people along her walk. She has achieved top ranking for her house training. Although Grits is housetrained, it is important to remember that accidents can occur while adjusting to a new home environment. Bring home the joy of Grits and make her your next family member. * Please keep in mind when considering adoption, dogs thrive on structure and routine. They adjust significantly better when their owners are committed to providing consistency and stability. The adoption fee for Grits is $500. That includes the cost of spaying/neutering, up to date vaccinations, foster care, rescue and transportation fees. To get the ball rolling, head over to our Adoption Application and submit your application today. A Dog Star representative will contact you within 24 hours. To speed up the process, contact your vet and give them permission to speak with us. If you do not get a response within 24 hours, check your spam folder.

Breed overview
Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
