Dog Breed: Unknown breed. Dakota is a beautiful, gentle, and loving dog looking for a wonderful new home. She is approximately 6 years old, weighs about 50 pounds, and is a spayed female Heeler/Australian Shepherd mix. Dakota loves being outdoors, exploring, and especially playing in the water. She has a sweet personality and would thrive with a family that can give her plenty of love, attention, and room to enjoy the outdoors. Finding a new home for Dakota is one of the most difficult decisions I have ever had to make. Unfortunately, I will soon be moving to a condominium in a nearby city, and the HOA does not allow large dogs. I also have two small dogs that will be moving with me. My greatest hope is to find Dakota a kind and caring family with a spacious backyard where she can run, play, and continue to enjoy the life she loves. She deserves a home filled with love, companionship, and the opportunity to be a cherished member of the family. A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
