Description
Dog Breed: German Shepherd Dog (medium coat). This handsome German Shepherd has had more than his share of challenges. Found as a stray in Yolo County on November 16, 2025, near Road 102, Bergamot's journey has been anything but easy. He was adopted and returned twice through no fault of his own. He survived a life-threatening case of bloat and underwent emergency surgery around Mother's Day, followed by a minor setback during recovery. Through it all, he has shown incredible resilience. Now, after weeks of healing and decompressing, Bergamot is finally ready for the next chapter of his life. Once he feels safe and settled, his true personality shines. He is gentle, sweet, and deeply loyalâthe qualities that make German Shepherds such remarkable companions. He enjoys attention and affection, happily sharing an apple with you or quietly keeping you company while you work. When it's time for an adventure, he's ready to go wherever you are. Bergamot has discovered the joy of toys and has become quite skilled at taking them apart. He loves car rides, exploring local parks, and learning new things. Food-motivated and eager to please, he is easy to train and responds well to established routines. He is crate trained, housebroken, and settles nicely into home life. While he may guard food around other dogs and has a strong prey drive, these behaviors are likely rooted in the survival skills he developed while living as a stray. Despite everything he has been through, Bergamot remains full of life. Even after two hours of walking, he still has energy to spare, yet he is equally happy to relax by your side. So many people have cared for Bergie throughout his stay at the shelter and in his foster home. Because of their dedication and commitment, he is healthy and ready for his new home. This majestic, beautiful shepherd has fought hard for another chance, and he deserves a happy ending. Please schedule an appointment to meet Bergamot at yoloshelter/dogs or email adoptyoloshelter.

Overview:
The German Shepherd Dog, a truly iconic breed, originated in Germany in the late 19th century, primarily for herding sheep. They are easily recognizable by their athletic, medium-to-large build, typically weighing between 50-90 pounds, with a distinct double coat that can be black and tan, sable, or solid black. Known for their intelligence and loyalty, German Shepherds possess a remarkably trainable and courageous temperament, making them exceptional working dogs in fields like police and service work. While generally good with families when properly socialized, their high energy levels and need for mental stimulation make them unsuitable for apartment living without significant daily exercise. Prospective owners should be aware of common health concerns such as hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as degenerative myelopathy, underscoring the importance of responsible breeding and regular veterinary care.
