Description
Dog Breed: Chihuahua. Adoption Fee: $195.00. All interested people should submit an adoption application as their first step. Meet Bella! Bella is a 10-year-old Chihuahua with a young heart and a whole lot of personality. This sweet girl found herself looking for a new home after her beloved elderly owner could no longer care for her. While that change has been difficult, Bella is ready to start her next chapter with a family of her own. Don't let her age fool you—Bella absolutely does not act like a senior! She's spunky, spry, and always ready to be part of the action. Whether she's trotting happily on a walk, carrying around one of her favorite toys, or soaking up attention from her people, Bella brings joy wherever she goes. Bella is crate trained, house trained, and walks beautifully on a leash. At the end of the day, her favorite place is right next to her humans—or even better, curled up on the bed with them. She is a true companion dog who thrives on love and affection and would much rather be in your lap than anywhere else. Bella gets along well with other dogs and can happily share her home with them, though she's more tolerant than playful. She doesn't really have much interest in dog-to-dog games and prefers spending her time with her people instead. Best of all, Bella is healthy, has no known medical conditions, is spayed, and is up to date on all her vaccinations. She's ready to settle into a loving home where she can be cherished for the wonderful little dog she is. If you're looking for a loyal, affectionate companion with plenty of pep left in her step, Bella may be the perfect match for you! All pets adopted from GDHS are spayed or neutered, have vaccinations brought up to date, are on heartworm preventative (dogs), FIV/FELV tested (cats) and microchipped. The Greater Derry Humane Society does not have a physical shelter, and all visits are by appointment only.

Overview:
The Chihuahua, a captivating breed known for its diminutive size, boasts an ancient and somewhat mysterious origin, with most theories pointing to Mexico as its birthplace, potentially descending from the "Techichi," a small companion dog of the Toltec civilization. Physically, they are easily recognizable by their small, compact bodies, large expressive eyes, and erect ears, appearing in both smooth and long-coated varieties, showcasing a vast array of colors and markings. Despite their tiny stature, Chihuahuas possess a big personality; they are often described as spirited, alert, and fiercely loyal to their owners, sometimes displaying a bold and confident demeanor. While their small size makes them exceptionally well-suited for apartment living, they thrive in homes where they receive ample attention and mental stimulation. They can be good family pets for older children who understand how to interact gently with a small dog, but their delicate build makes them less suitable for boisterous toddlers. Regarding health, Chihuahuas can be prone to certain conditions like patellar luxation, heart problems, and dental issues, making regular veterinary check-ups crucial for their well-being.
