Diesel is a social butterfly and warms up quickly to everyone. He will be giving you kisses and snuggling with you in no time. He is very energetic and loves to play, so a home with another young, small dog or medium, gentle dog would be idea. He also likes his alone time and when he's done playing, he will occupy himself by playing with a toy or doing zoomies around the yard. As much as he loves playing, he also loves to snuggle and loves to drape himself all over his 38 lbs. foster sister or sneak under his foster mom's arm when she's typing on the couch and take over so that she has to stop working and pay attention to him. Diesel is very loving once he deems you ok in his book and will give you as many kisses as you can handle. He is mostly housetrained, only has accidents if you don't take him out on a schedule. He can sleep through the night without having to go but his foster family puts down pee pads just in case (but he's only used it once!). Like a typical dachshund, he tends to drizzle a little pee when he gets too excited, but it's happening less and less now that he's more comfortable in his foster home. He does like to jump, so his foster mom now has gates up all over the house and ramps or small steps up for him to get up and down the couch. If you're a doxie person, you'll see why everyone is falling in love with Diesel all over the internet! Diesel has extra cartilage in his one ear but that just makes him all the cuter. Our must haves for Mr. Diesel: A fenced in yard Another young small dog for him to play with Someone that is home more than not, this is a plus Because dachshunds are known barker we cannot adopt to anyone in an apartment, high rise or condo Are you the right home for him? ============== Information for All Dogs/Adopters ============== AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Overview:
The Dachshund, affectionately known as the "wiener dog," is a fascinating breed originating in Germany, primarily bred to hunt badgers and other burrowing animals. Their most distinctive physical characteristic is their long, low-slung body and short, muscular legs, a feature perfectly adapted for tunneling. They come in three coat types – smooth, longhaired, and wirehaired – and various sizes, from miniature to standard. Temperamentally, Dachshunds are known for being courageous, curious, and often quite playful, with a surprising amount of energy. While they are intelligent, their independent nature can make training a delightful challenge. Their small size and relatively low exercise requirements make them well-suited for apartment living, and they can be wonderful companions for families, though early socialization is key, especially with children and other pets. Regarding health, their unique body shape predisposes them to intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), so careful handling and weight management are crucial.
