Description
Dog Breed: Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Mixed (short coat). Location: Jay, ME Available: Max He swims! He hikes! He paddle boards! Meet Max: the king size adventure buddy in a snack size package! Max is a 2-ish year old Australian Cattle Dog mix. His size (just under 30 lbs), markings, and clownish personality suggest he could be part Jack Russell or Fox Terrier. But that’s a guess - he was brought to the shelter as a stray, so we don’t know his history or his parentage. (But phew! If you’re looking for a nose work or Barn Hunt candidate, I’ve got your boy.) Max is the poster child for the phrase “Love Wins.” In a few short weeks, he’s transformed from a terrified dog who would not leave his crate, to a happy, affectionate adventurer who loves a good belly rub.* He’s a medium energy boy who’s never met a toy - or a treat - he didn’t like. He’s house trained and rides well in the car, too! Max enjoys the company of other dogs, and would love a balanced, playful canine companion. He would also do fine as an only dog. He has not been exposed to cats in his foster home, but it’s likely that his high prey drive would get him in trouble with kitties. Max would not thrive in a busy, chaotic household. He needs calm, routine, and structure in an adult-only home. *Membership in Max’s belly rub club must be earned. He is still skittish, but every day his playful personality shines brighter. He has come so far and so fast, we know that with more time and gentle socialization, he’s going to be an absolutely amazing dog. He does seem to be more nervous with men than women, and we’re going to be very careful about rightness of fit. Experience with Cattle Dogs and with dogs who are learning to trust would be a plus. Max is neutered, microchipped, and up to date on vaccines and preventatives. He is being fostered in Maine. Questions about our sweet Max can be addressed to headoverheelers207gmail . Breed overview
Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
