Description
Dog Breed: Poodle (Miniature). Available for Adoption: Sweetie Sweetie came to GTDR after a kind stranger recognized that she desperately needed help. She arrived severely underweight, dirty, with overgrown nails, matted fur, and a closed cauliflower ears caused by an untreated yeast infection which raged over her entire body. She had significant hair loss from scratching and biting on her self. GTDR immediately provided medical care, vaccinations, and placement in a foster home where her healing journey could begin. I was fortunate to become Sweetie’s foster mom and help her discover that life could be filled with patience, kindness, gentle voices, and love. Watching her transformation has been truly remarkable. I have two GTDR rescue dogs that I adopted and trained to be dog-social, and they helped teach Sweetie many important doggy manners. She learned how to use a doggy door, sit patiently for treats, and become part of a family pack. My dogs were incredibly patient with her, as she initially had very few social skills around other dogs, suggesting she had little previous exposure to them. Sweetie has shown very little interest in toys, which makes her an excellent match for someone seeking a loving companion rather than an active playmate. She does not need another dog in the home and requires only moderate exercise. What she loves most is spending time with her person—and, of course, food! When she first arrived, Sweetie was timid, not house-trained, and reluctant to trust anyone. Today, she is approximately 90% potty trained and does very well when taken outside regularly every few hours. Seeing her grow into a loving, gentle house dog with good manners has been incredibly rewarding. Sweetie does experience separation anxiety and may cry when left alone. Leaving a television or radio on has helped comfort her. We chose not to crate her because she appeared fearful of crates and consistently avoided even an open, comfortable crate that my own dogs used regularly. Thankfully, her yeast infection has since been resolved with treatment. her coat is growing back beautifully & now she is healthy and well cared for. Sweetie will thrive in a quiet home with someone who can offer a gentle hand, a soft voice, patience, and lots of love as she continues healing emotionally and physically. She sleeps peacefully at the foot of the bed and is very food-motivated, making continued training both easy and rewarding. One of Sweetie’s most endearing traits is how she asks for attention. She gently stands on her back legs and softly paws at your leg, barely touching you. It perfectly reflects her sweet and gentle personality. At nearly five years old and just 15 pounds, Sweetie is a petite little girl with a charming underbite that makes her look like she’s always smiling. She does not shed but will require regular professional grooming. She rides calmly in the car and is already leash trained. Sweetie could easily have become a foster failure, but we know there is a perfect forever family waiting for her. She still has many wonderful years ahead of her and would make an exceptional companion, especially for a retiree or someone looking for a devoted best friend. She has had a vet visit, is spayed, Microchipped, UTD on all vaccinations, had a 4 DX test (testing for Lyme disease and two types of tick-borne illnesses), flea/tick/heartworm prevention (Nexgard Plus), 2 dewormings, and a 1 fecal test. Adopters will receive all original paperwork, a 14-day health guarantee, a collar, harness, leash, seatbelt lock, and a week's worth of food. We operate on a first-come, first-served basis and are by appointment only. We are located in Mesa, AZ., near Gilbert/Brown & offer flexible hours 7 days a week. Private message if interested!

Overview:
The Miniature Poodle, a charming and intelligent companion, originated in Germany as a water retriever before being refined in France. They are renowned for their elegant appearance, characterized by a distinctive curly coat (often requiring regular grooming to prevent matting), long muzzle, and expressive dark eyes. Standing typically between 10 to 15 inches tall and weighing 10 to 15 pounds, they are a compact yet sturdy breed. Temperamentally, Miniature Poodles are known for their high intelligence, making them highly trainable and eager to please. They are generally lively, affectionate, and can be quite playful, thriving on interaction with their families. Their adaptable nature makes them well-suited for apartment living, provided they receive adequate daily exercise and mental stimulation. They are often excellent with children and other pets when properly socialized. While generally healthy, potential owners should be aware of breed-specific concerns such as progressive retinal atrophy, luxating patella, and Addison's disease. With their captivating looks and bright minds, the Miniature Poodle makes a delightful and devoted family member.
