Description

Dog Breed: Siberian Husky (medium coat). Everest is a beautiful, shy, young Husky who is taking some time to discover that the humans here at the shelter are kind and trustworthy. Everest has a curious nature when it comes to other dogs she sees, as well as people, and her environment, and she has relaxed enough to play with a couple of toys. When allowed to check things out at her own pace she becomes visibly more comfortable, and will continue to blossom in a patient, quiet home. OTHER PETS: Everest showed minimal interest during a dog meet, however as she relaxes we will continue to assess how she feels around her fellow canines. Any resident dog who is relaxed and well socialized may be workable, and must meet Everest prior to adoption. [Case-By-Case (Must Meet First)] OWNER EXPERIENCE: Experience with positive reinforcement, and helping shy dogs learn they are safe, would be an ideal fit for Everest. Nervous dogs do best in homes where there is little chaos, and a safe space to go when things become overwhelming. An owner willing to keep an active dog’s needs met will also help Everest be her best self. [Experienced] KIDS: [Older (15+)] Because Everest is nervous and sensitive to noises, touch, and can be anxious, she would be happiest in an adult-only home. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Everest is young and curious, and will do best with regular exercise and playtime in safe areas, combined with mental enrichment such as scent games, food puzzles/scatter feeding, and ongoing learning. Physical exercise and mental enrichment will help meet any dog’s needs and both are a great way to learn about Everest’s favorite pastimes. [Active/Young] VETERINARY CARE: [Average] LEVEL OF TRAINING NEEDED: Everest is still young and will thrive with positive reinforcement and happy experiences as she learns new skills & fun tricks. Positive reinforcement is will help Everest build confidence while bonding with her guardian. She will also benefit from slow introductions to handling such as leash/harness, noises, physical touch. New experiences should occur slowly, at her pace, and paired with high value treats to create pleasant associations. Reading body language will help know when to give her space, which can be found on our website: .tjoconnoradoptioncenter/resources/dog-resources GROOMING: Everest has a thick double coat and will need regular, consistent grooming (2-3 times a week, but sometimes daily depending on season) to stay comfortable and avoid matting, and introduced at her pace. Dogs with thick coats can benefit from a combination of in-home grooming as well as fear-free professional grooming. [Professional Grooming]

Siberian Husky

A.K.A.: Husky, Arctic Husky, Chukcha, Chukchi, Chukchi Sled Dog, Sibe, Sibes, Sled Dog, Snow Dog
Overview:

The Siberian Husky is a striking and beloved breed, originating from Northeast Asia where they were bred by the Chukchi people for pulling sleds over long distances in harsh conditions. Physically, they are easily recognizable by their medium size, thick double coat (available in various colors and markings), and often captivating blue or bi-colored eyes. Their temperament is typically friendly, outgoing, and playful, making them generally good with children and other dogs. However, their independent and sometimes stubborn nature, coupled with a strong prey drive, means consistent training and secure containment are essential. While affectionate, their high energy levels and need for significant exercise make them less suitable for sedentary lifestyles or tiny apartments; a house with a securely fenced yard is often preferred. Health-wise, they are generally robust but can be prone to certain conditions like hip and elbow dysplasia and eye problems such as cataracts and progressive retinal atrophy. Overall, a Siberian Husky thrives with active families committed to meeting their exercise and mental stimulation needs.
